Letter from the Principal July 9, 2020

July 9, 2020

Hello Andrada Families,

I have had an email ready to go for weeks, and yet every time I was ready to hit send, something else changed. I cannot guarantee that something won’t change after you read this, but I want to reach out and keep you updated as we get closer to the beginning of the new school year.

Most importantly, please know that you and your students are on my mind, all the time. As the leader of a school with over a hundred employees, 750 students, and all of their families, I am experiencing my job as a principal very differently these days. It is my nature to do whatever possible to make sure everyone is “okay.” With so much out of my control, I can only focus on what is… making sure my students receive the best instruction possible regardless of the obstacles we are facing because of COVID 19 and doing everything possible to make sure they are safe and feel safe when in my care. Principals and District leadership have been working non-stop since March, ducking and weaving with each change, to have a plan in place to educate our Vail kids when the new school year begins. And as you can imagine, given the fluidity of the situation, there is a lot on the cutting room floor, so to speak.

Please read the information below and I will continue to update you as I have more specifics.

New Administrator: We are excited to welcome Courtney Young as our new assistant principal. Mrs. Young has been an English teacher at Andrada for three years and is excited to join Mr. Carrier and myself as part of the admin team.

High School Hours: Last school year, the Vail Governing Board approved new start and stop times for our high schools. The school day will be 9:00 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. Zero hour will be 7:40 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. (Monday through Thursday.)

Andrada Dance Program: We are excited to welcome Karina Levy to Andrada. She will be teaching dance and working on creating our Fine Arts Pathway. All levels of experience are

welcomed! Dance can be taken as an elective (regardless of Pathway) and will count as a Fine Arts credit toward graduation.

Construction Update: Andrada now has four beautiful tennis courts. As everything “normalizes,” they will be used for our after-school tennis club and our AIA boys and girls tennis teams in the spring. In the future, they will also be available for public use. The finishing touches are being put on our Andrada Presentation Hall which will serve as our dance studio, performance theater, and presentation space.

Student Schedules: Regardless of what is showing on PowerSchool, student schedules are not finalized. Our counselors are on summer break and will work on schedules when they return. Please do not email our counselors with changes now. We will notify you when they are ready to view.

Fee Pay: We will be doing on-line Fee Pay the last week in July. You will receive information and instructions on what needs to be completed before the first day of school.

Start Date: School officially begins on Monday, August 10th. We will begin with “remote” instruction until the Governor says students can return to school—as of today, August 17th.

-The school day will be from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Zero hour classes will be from 8:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m.

– Teachers will be instructing periods 0-6 from their classrooms.

– Students will be expected to attend each class period remotely at the time each class period occurs. Attendance will be taken.

– Instruction will be a combination of synchronous (occurring in real time) and asynchronous lessons/activities.

– Unlike 4th quarter’s educational opportunities, remote learning will focus on mastery of the content. Grades will be assigned based on proficiency and assessments. Although instruction will be happening remotely, the rigor of the curriculum and the class expectations will be the same.

More information about the specific daily schedule and the platforms which will be used for instruction will be sent in the near future.

I will be in touch within the next few weeks regarding Fee Pay, computer pick-up, and freshman orientation. Thank you for being our partner in your child’s education through this uncertain time.
